Active & Healthy Lifestyles
At Fazakerley Primary School, we categorise an active and healthy lifestyle as:
· Eating well
· Sleeping well
· Keeping moving
EATING WELL
We are a healthy school and explicitly teach our children through our Science, PSHE and character curriculum, the benefits of a balanced, nutritious diet.
All children in EYFS and KS1 are given fruit and milk every day free of charge as part of our healthy lifestyle offer and in KS2 are provided with milk and can bring in fruit for snack.
All children have water bottles in school and are encouraged to drink water regularly throughout the day.
We have a strict policy on the contents of lunch boxes which exclude sweets, chocolate and fizzy drinks. We provide a balanced and nutritious lunch offer which always includes freshly made soup, salad and fruit, in addition to a main and dessert.
Examples of meal options offered throughout the school year can be seen by clicking the link:
SLEEPING WELL
We explicitly teach our children about the importance of sleep and its benefits to our body and mind. We ensure our parents and carers are also fully aware of the amount of sleep children require to ensure their bodies and minds are functioning at maximum capacity, repairing and restoring their brains and bodies.
Regular safeguarding newsletters are sent to parents and carers throughout the year to continuously share these messages.
KEEPING MOVING
Our children are explicitly taught about the importance of physical activity and our PE, Science and PSHE curriculum embed this learning. We have worked hard to ensure that our school grounds promote physical activity at playtimes in the following ways:
MUGA
BASKETBALL PITCH
GOAL POSTS for competitive games
TRIM TRAILS
CLIMBING EQUIPMENT
OUTDOOR GYM EQUIPMENT
ACTIVALL
BOULDERING WALL
BIKES AND CARS
FOOTBALL GOALS
MOBILE SPORTS TROLLIES – including bats and balls, skipping ropes etc
TABLE TENNIS
At playtimes, all teachers and support staff supervise and play games/sports with our children. You will see children playing football, cricket, rounders, table tennis etc with their adults. Our playtimes ensure our children are as active as possible.

SPORTS CLUBS
We have several extra-curricular sports clubs available to our children before and after school hours including: football clubs, dance groups and multi-sports clubs. We encourage all children to join our clubs, ensuring that they have every opportunity to nurture their talents and skills.
We try to involve our children in as many sporting competitions as possible. We believe that competitive sport:
Develops physical activity.
Builds teamwork.
Builds discipline as it requires dedicated training and practise.
Nurtures qualities like perseverance, leadership, and resilience.
Encourages higher standards of achievement. It's only natural to apply more effort when the stakes are higher and less effort when the outcome is of less importance.
We believe it is healthy for children to learn to bounce back from setbacks and embrace challenges as opportunities for growth.
Our children have participated in the following sporting competitions this year:
Basketball
Matball
Numerous dance competitions
Water polo
Football tournaments
Inter-schools football competitions
Tesco Fruit & Veg for Schools
Fazakerley Primary School is delighted to be a part of the Tesco Fruit and Vegetables Initiative, a fantastic programme aimed at promoting healthy eating among our pupils. This initiative provides our pupils with access to fresh fruits and vegetables, encouraging them to incorporate more nutritious foods into their daily diets.
As participants in this initiative, our pupils will benefit from regular deliveries of a wide variety of fresh produce, which will be included in their school meals and snacks. This not only enhances their nutritional intake but also helps to instil a love for healthy foods from an early age.
By being part of the Tesco Fruit and Vegetables Initiative, Fazakerley Primary School is committed to supporting the health and well-being of our children. We believe that fostering a positive relationship with food is essential for their development, and this programme plays a vital role in equipping them with the knowledge and habits that contribute to a healthier lifestyle.
