Learning Mentors

Learning Mentors
at Fazakerly Primary School

Fazakerley Primary School believes in the development of the whole child within education and life.

To support this, we are proud to have two Learning Mentors who are accessible to all children across the school.

As an integrated part of the learning support team, the aim of the Learning Mentors is to provide support and guidance to children who are experiencing difficulties with their learning typically due to emotional or behavioural needs. Much of the Learning Mentor role involves creating and maintaining positive relationships with pupils, teachers, parents/carers and external agencies in order to assist pupils to develop their academic, social and emotional skills so they are able to reach their full potential.

Children will find it difficult to access learning opportunities if they are experiencing barriers to learning. These barriers can include:

 ·         Anxiety and worries

·         Difficulties at home

·         Behaviour for learning

·         Issues concerning friendships/social anxieties

·         Dealing with bereavement/loss

·         General disaffection and disengagement from learning

·         Transition between phases/from primary to secondary

·         Transition between home and school in the mornings

·         Difficulties with organisation

·         Anger Management

·         SEMH- Social skills, Self-esteem, Honesty, Positive thinking

·         Emotional Literacy

·         Mental Health

At Fazakerley Primary School Mrs Dempsey and Mrs Jacques are our Learning Mentors. They both work with many of our children, supporting them by:

-listening

-encouraging

-motivating

-exploring problems

-discussing relevant issues

-giving information

-offering guidance

-setting goals and targets

Mrs Dempsey and Mrs Jacques work alongside the teaching and classroom staff in ensuring pupils can enjoy and achieve during their time in school.

What happens when I go to see the Learning Mentors?

For our pupils, you may be asked to see the Learning Mentors either on your own or as part of a group.  When you first meet with Mrs Dempsey or Mrs Jacques, all they want to do is get to know you a bit.  After that, it depends on what you talk about and what you both or all agree you need.  Mrs Dempsey or Mrs Jacques may help you to set targets.  These may be about homework, school work, attendance, behaviour, or any other problems which may be affecting your learning.

For you as parents and carers, we can offer support, advice and information regarding issues that affect not just your child’s education, but their emotional and behavioural development.  We can signpost you to other agencies that can provide support, but most importantly, we are a friendly voice on the end of the phone if you need us.  We have an “open door” policy, if you are not able to see us then if you leave a message we will get back to you.
